What is generative engine optimization (GEO) and how is it different from SEO?
Generative engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so AI answer engines can retrieve, understand, and cite it. Traditional SEO competes for a ranked list of blue links; GEO competes to be the source a model quotes inside a generated answer, which rewards clear entity definitions, question-shaped pages, structured data, and machine-readable files like llms.txt.
GEO favors specificity over keyword density: a model needs an unambiguous subject, a direct answer near the top, and consistent facts across your site.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the narrower discipline of writing the single canonical answer to a question. GEO is the site-wide architecture that makes those answers discoverable.
